This is our Birthday Celebration Policy. Food items or balloons WILL NOT be allowed for birthday celebrations in the classroom. No celebrations involving food or drink will be permitted. Parents, if you wish to recognize your child's birthday at school, you may provide decorative pencils, bookmarks, erasers, or stickers. You also have the choice of donating a book directly to the classroom. Talk to your child's teacher about what book might help the classroom collection. Teachers may elect to honor students as they see fit by giving special recognition, singing of songs, special classroom duties, etc. In addition, birthday party invitations need to be handed out outside of school hours. We have decided to implement this new policy because of several concerns: 1) conflicts with our local wellness policy regarding childhood obesity, 2) conflicts with the guidelines of the district's Child Nutritional Service, 3) concerns over students who have food allergies, 4) the negative impact these food items have on our office and custodial staff, and 5) loss of instructional time

Every Wednesday is Walk n' Roll to School Day for students. Laurelwood families are encouraged to walk, bike and roll to school each Wednesday to promote daily physical activity, reduce traffic congestion around Laurelwood and learn critical skills that enhance biking and pedestrian safety. A "Lion Pass" was given to each student. Every Wednesday that students walk or bike to school, they can receive a special hole punch on their Lion Pass given by a parent volunteer, or staff member wearing a bright yellow vest beginning at 7:55 am at the following two points: Evergreen Way and Partridge Drive/Buena Park Court and Buena View Court. Students can earn special prizes for every 5 hole punches they receive in the office during first recess. (Students must get their "Lion Pass" punched at these drop-off/walking points to earn prizes.) PARENTS - Our drop-off loop will be CLOSED each Wednesday morning until 8:15am to ensure safe passage for students on to campus. The loop will be open in the afternoon for dismissal. Please click on the link above for information on Walk n' Roll at Laurelwood.
