One of the questions that parents frequently ask is, "We are going out of town for a few days. Will my child be considered truant?" The answer is, "Yes!" According to California Education Code 48260(a), Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof, is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district. Excused absences basically fall into the following categories: illness or injury, medical or dental appointments, the funeral of an immediate family member or mandatory court appointments. Unexcused absences would include travel out of the country (even if the purpose of the trip is to visit an ill relative) for sports tournaments and vacations of any sort. In addition to accruing unexcused absences and being labeled as truant, children with unexcused absences of 10 or more days are dis-enrolled from school. Sometimes this results in there being no space available when the family returns from vacation and attempts to re-enroll their students. The school district strongly suggests that parents schedule vacations and other trips during school breaks and holidays. Please contact our attendance office if you have any questions regarding this matter. (408) 270-4983.
