What is Deeper Learning?

Principal's message

You'll often hear us talk about wanting deeper learning outcomes for our students. But, what does that mean?

Deeper Learning was a term introduced by the Hewlitt Foundation in an effort to define the college and career skills our children will need for a successful life:

1. Mastery of core academic content

2.Thinking critically and solving complex problems

3. Working collaboratively

4. Communicating effectively

5. Learning how to learn

6. Developing academic mindsets such as belonging, belief that learning can grow, and having purpose.

In the past these skills have been referred to as 21st century skills. Using our K. Smith Habits, each student becomes a:

  • Thinker
  • Learner
  • Worker
  • Communicator
  • Collaborator
  • Contributor

One of the best ways to develop and encourage these habits and deeper learning outcomes is through a well-designed, hands-on, meaningful learning experience – project based learning. Through projects, students work together, think critically and solve problems, write, read, create speeches, and more.

The next time your child comes home talking about a project, ask him or her about the habits and you'll see the deeper learning (aka 21st century skills) that each student is developing to be prepared for this ever changing world.
